1. What is ESL at JHU?

The Language Teaching Center at Johns Hopkins University offers English as a Second Language courses to help students and professionals sharpen their communication skills. Courses are designed for students with intermediate to advanced knowledge of English who want to increase their effectiveness at work, at school, or in social settings.

 2. What courses do you offer?

Generally, courses in Oral Communications and Academic and Professional Writing are offered each semester, with additional rotating courses in Building Fluency through Film, American Culture, TOEFL Preparation, and English for Medical Professionals. 3. Do I receive credit for taking an ESL course?

ESL is a non-credit program. All students will receive a certificate of completion after successful completion of every semester.

4. When do classes meet and how long does the semester last?

The part-time program for fall and spring semesters generally lasts 13 weeks with classes meeting one or two evenings per week. The full-time intensive program in the summer lasts for 5 weeks with classes meeting for a total of 22-25 hours per week. Full semester dates and class schedules are available here. Meeting times are subject to change depending on class size.

5. How much is tuition?

The cost of tuition is $795 per course. The cost for the full intensive summer program (3 courses) is $2,300.

6. Can I get a discount on tuition?

No, we do not offer discounted tuition rates at this time. However, Johns Hopkins University faculty and staff may be eligible for tuition remission. Check with your benefits office to see if this option is available. We also accept payment from your employer or JHU department if they support your taking classes for professional development.

7. Do you offer financial aid?

No, we do not have a financial aid option at this time.

8. If I drop a course, can I get a refund?

Students may receive a full refund of tuition up to the first day of classes. After that, the regular refund policy applies. For a complete refund schedule, click here.

9. Do I have to attend every class?

As a general attendance policy, students are allowed up to a certain number of absences and still be able to complete the course. If your schedule does not allow you to attend the program from beginning to end, you may want to consider registering for the following semester instead.

10. Do I have to be a JHU student to take ESL?

No. We encourage any student or professional 17 years of age or older to enroll in our courses to sharpen their English skills.

11. Can I get a visa to take ESL courses?

Fall/Spring: No, we do not sponsor a visa for international students enrolled in a part-time ESL program.

Summer: Yes, if you register for the full program (3 courses), we will be able to sponsor a visa for any international student. Make sure that all the required forms are received by our office by the deadline of April 1 with no exceptions. More information about visas is available here.

12. Can I register for ESL if I am under 18 years of age?

Summer: The ESL program is open to pre-college students between 15 and 17 years of age. If housing is needed, students can register for the Pre-College Residential portion of the ESL program. More information on housing is available here.

14. How do I know what level to register for?

Fall/Spring: Placement testing is available before the start of the semester to determine which level you should register for. Before turning in your registration, contact the ESL office (esl@jhu.edu) to schedule an appointment for a placement test.

Summer: On the application, register for the course you think is closest to your skill level. A placement test will be given prior to the first day of classes to determine which class is best for you.

15. Do you provide housing? Is the cost of housing included in tuition?

Housing costs are not included in tuition and are arranged only for the summer semester. More information about housing is available here.

16. Do you have any job or volunteer opportunities for teachers of ESL?

Currently, we do not have any volunteer opportunities available for the ESL program. Job openings are posted at the Language Teaching Center website (located here) as they become available.
