Arabic Course Descriptions:

375.115-116 Beginning Arabic
Introductory course in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Modern Standard Arabic.  The course presents the basic grammatical structures of the language and a basic vocabulary.  Through oral-aural drill in the classroom, work with tapes in the Language Laboratory, and reading and writing exercises done inside and outside of class, students attain a basic level of competence in the language on which they can build in subsequent years of study.  Culture is also introduced as a fifth skill.  May not be taken S/U.  4.5 credits

375.215-216  Intermediate Arabic  (H)
This two-semester course is designed to bring the students up to the level of competency required for third and fourth year Arabic.  Students will consolidate and expand their mastery of the four basic skills acquired in 375.115-116.  More authentic material--written, audio, and visual--will be used, and culture will be further expanded on as a fifth skill.  There will also be more exposure to the three major variants of Arabic introduced in the first year Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic.

375.301-302  Advanced Reading and Writing I and II (H)
Designed to enhance students’ ability to read, discuss, and write about various topics covered in traditional and contemporary Arabic texts.

375.401-402   Upper Advanced Arabic (H)
Prereq: 375.301-302 or equivalent  This is an introductory course to different periods of the Arabic literature. Selections of famous Arabic poetry and short prose works are the substance of the course.
